Windows alternative

With the release of Windows Vista, many of us have faced the dilemma of having to upgrade to a new Operating System. But switching is not really an easy task as Vista requires you to have a very capable computer. So what do you do if your setup doesn’t meet up to the requirements? Do you go out there and buy expensive upgrades that you really don’t want or need for your computer? You might as well buy a brand new PC, but that would leave your already owned and perfectly good PC there to collect dust. What do you do with it?

Or maybe you have changed to Vista but are faced with the reality that it’s a very poor product. Truth be told, it’s slow, inefficient and full of bugs.

There is a solution, and it won’t cost you a cent. You could install Linux on your PC. Linux is a different kind of operating system; it’s fast, it’s powerful, and best of all its free.

But why try it?

First of all it’s not a resource hog like Windows Vista, or Windows XP for that matter. Many available distributions run well on PCs that don’t have the latest hardware. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll get a dull system. Linux can handle hardware better than any Windows system and runs more efficiently. Or if you have the hardware you can make your system look absolutely amazing. Just take a look at the pictures of the 3D desktop.

Furthermore, the operating system is not the only thing that’s free; you can install a plethora of great software that’s freely available and downloadable all over the web. There are programs for many categories, these are just a few:

• Office suites
• Graphics design
• Music
• Video
• Web Surfing
• E - Mail
• CD/DVD Burning
• Download managers
• Money Management

You don’t even have to replace your existing Windows installation. You can install Linux, and every time your computer starts, you see a menu that lets you choose which operating system (Linux or Windows) you want to start.

Another alternative is that you can run a Live CD. A Live CD is a disc you put in your CD/DVD Drive before you turn on your computer. When your computer starts, it will start the Linux Operating system from the CD without having you install anything on your PC. This is a great way to try Linux risk free.

Linux has a huge online community, so no matter what problem you face, you can always find a solution with the help of millions of people.

You can download a distribution of Linux from various web sites or you can visit http://distrowatch.com where you can find the greatest distributions of Linux listed. You can choose the best one that fits your needs, but if you’re looking for something easy to use, may I recommend Ubuntu, it’s very good. After you download the distribution, you can burn it onto a CD or DVD and install it by restating your computer.

A fantastic site where you can find good Linux tutorials on a lot of topics is www.howtoforge.com.

You should give Linux a try; you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain from it.
